Mt Gravatt ESJG
Mt Gravatt ESJG is an Ecumenical Social Justice Group working among churches in the Mt Gravatt area on Brisbane's Southside. At their outset as a group in October 2002, members considered the areas of need in the community and settled on three priorities:
  1. poverty;
  2. support of refugees;
  3. the environment.

The main thrust of the engagement in Social Justice work is for people to be "drivers" in their area of interest, thus tapping into their energy, passion, interest and motivation. Meetings are held on the 3rd Wednesday of each month at a member's home.

For more information, or if you are interested in joining, phone Dennis Lim on (07) 3849-4919

Activities
One of the Group's first activities was the donation of bicycle helmets (in collaboration with the Village Ave Church and the Romero Centre) to Temporary Protection Visa Holders. As well there have been several "one off" ventures such as donation of Christmas hampers; the signing of a petition in relation to child asylum seekers; a Candlelight Vigil for Peace on the eve of the war in Iraq; the bussing of people to the City Hall for a public rally and attendance at the dialogue between members of the Muslim and Christian faiths held in the City Hall.

Support to Refugees
Late in 2002 the Mt Gravatt ESJG was approached by a man, now an Australian citizen, who had just found his extended family in a refugee camp in Malawi. The Uniting, Anglican and Catholic churches with the assistance of the Society of St Vincent de Paul, raised more than $8,000 to bring the family to Australia and establish them here.

Koinonia Savings and Loans Scheme
One of the major projects of the Mt Gravatt ESJG is the Koinonia Savings and Loans Scheme. Koinonia is Greek for 'community'. In an attempt to address poverty in the community the group aims to make it possible for people not only to develop the habit of saving, but also to borrow small amounts of money with dignity. The sum borrowed is paid back, in affordable amounts. It is hoped that in this way large interest debts can be avoided

As at Nov 2004 there were 25 members in three cells and the cells have made loans of up to $500 each. Members of each cell meet separately once a month to put in their $10 savings and to talk. Then we meet together as a combined group two or three times a year to celebrate, chat and exchange ideas. This project has been an exceptional success and is attracting new members all the time.
